THE TUNNEL UNDER THE SEA
For many years, people dreamed of travelling from Britain to France without using a ship. Engineers suggested different ideas, but building a tunnel under the English Channel was difficult and expensive. Work on the modern Channel Tunnel finally began in 1988.
The tunnel runs between Folkestone in southern England and Coquelles near Calais in northern France. It is about 50 kilometres long. Around 38 kilometres of the route are under the sea, which makes it one of the longest underwater tunnels in the world. The deepest part is about 75 metres below the sea.
Building the tunnel was a huge project. Thousands of workers took part. Special machines cut through the rock from both sides of the Channel. British and French workers finally met under the sea in December 1990. The moment was shown on television in both countries.
The tunnel officially opened in May 1994. Cars, coaches and lorries do not simply drive through it on a normal road. They travel on special trains. Passengers stay in their vehicles during the journey. There are also high-speed passenger trains that connect London with cities such as Paris and Brussels.
A trip through the tunnel itself takes about 35 minutes. Travelling from London to Paris by high-speed train takes a little over two hours. For many passengers this is easier than flying because they can travel from one city centre to another.
The tunnel has three separate passages. Two are used by trains, while the smaller middle tunnel is used for safety and maintenance. In an emergency, passengers can move into this service tunnel.
There have been several problems over the years. Fires have sometimes stopped trains, and bad weather has caused delays at the terminals. However, millions of passengers use the tunnel every year.
An interesting fact is that the idea is much older than the tunnel itself. A French engineer suggested an underwater tunnel as early as 1802. His plan even included lamps inside the tunnel and an artificial island in the middle of the Channel. The technology needed to build such a tunnel did not exist at that time, so the idea had to wait for almost two hundred years.
lorry – a large vehicle that carries things
passage – a way or tunnel that you can move through
maintenance – work that keeps something safe and working
