TEENAGERS WHO GET THINGS DONE
Lots of teenagers would like some extra money, but not everybody wants a normal Saturday job. We asked five young people about the small jobs they do in their neighbourhood.
I really like animals, so my little business is perfect for me. When families go away for the weekend, I look after their pets. I feed cats, give rabbits fresh water and sometimes take dogs for a walk. I also clean the animals' cages if necessary. Most families already know me, so they often tell their friends about me. At the moment I'm saving my money for a new bicycle.
I'm quite good with computers. Some older people in our street find smartphones and tablets difficult to use, so I help them. I show them how to send photos, make video calls or organize their pictures. Sometimes I also help them print important documents. I never ask for much money, but people often give me something because they're happy that I have helped them.
My favourite job is working outside. In autumn, lots of gardens are full of leaves. I collect them, cut grass and water plants when people are away. One neighbour has a very large garden, so I sometimes work there for two hours. It can be hard work, but I like being outside and I earn quite a lot.
I love baking. Every two weeks I make cookies, small cakes and chocolate tarts. My aunt has a little café, and she lets me sell some of them there. I have to pay for the ingredients myself, so I don't keep all the money. However, I normally make a small profit. I'm saving for a new camera.
People often have books, toys or games that they don't use any more. I help neighbours sell these things online. I take photos, write short descriptions and put the adverts on a website. When somebody buys something, I help to pack it. I get part of the money from every sale. Last month I made £45, which was my best month so far.
